I Ching/Symbolic Landscapes 2012-2017
The I Ching is an ancient divination system used for more than 2000 years. There is commentary and interpretation and a suggestion for right action in each human situation. A ritual incorporating chance selects one of 64 hexagram to suggest a best action.
The I Ching is used throughout the world, providing inspiration to religions, psychoanalysis, business, literature and art. It is also a book of wisdom. Change is perceived as the continuous transformation of one force into another; a cycle subject to the universal law, Tao.
From January 2012 until December 2017, I painted this series of Symbolic Landscapes inspired by the I Ching or Book of Changes. The 64 paintings are 20” square, oil on cradled birch panels. As my work has always referenced the northern landscape, this series continues that exploration, but with an interior dimension of symbols and geometric juxtapositions.
During the pandemic in 2021, I created a book using the paintings of the 64 paintings. I used the translation of the I Ching by Brian Arnold as the text. (From the app Yi Jing) Also in the book is a brief explanation of how to cast coins to use the I Ching.
The book is printed by BookBaby and is for sale online athttps://store.bookbaby.com/book/i-ching-or-book-of-changes-symbolic-landscapes
